The Alternative Breaks@Stanford service and learning immersion programs expose students to complex social and cultural issues through community visits, experiential learning, direct service, group discussion, readings, and reflection activities. The program's vision is to transform students into advocates of social change on issues affecting our local, national and global communities. Alternative Breaks@Stanford is a Voluntary Student Organization Voluntary Student Organization at Stanford University and a student-led affiliate of the Haas Center for Public Service. Alternative Breaks would not exist without the generous funding from ASSU Special Fees. Alternative Breaks@Stanford is a Break Away Chapter Program.

Impact
Transforming students into advocates of social change.

Alternative Break programs have inspired many students to continue their involvement with the particular social/cultural issues they explored through their course and trip. Student groups have been formed, majors changed, and new careers discovered.

History
The first alternative break trip occurred during spring break in 1987. This first trip was led by staff members of what was then called the Public Service Center (later renamed the Haas Center for Public Service). The spring break program grew and eventually became a student-run registered organization at Stanford – Alternative Spring Break (ASB). In 1996 a winter quarter course was added to the program to complement the trip and to enhance the student learning experience. The ASB program has thrived on campus growing to offer as many as 18 courses and trips each year.

Based on the success and growing interest in ASB, in 2008 the Impact Abroad program was launched to provide similar opportunities on a global level during the summer quarter. In 2012, as part of ASB's 25th anniversary celebration, the ThanksGiving Back program was launched to offer opportunities during the Thanksgiving week break.

Recognition
Stanford's ASB Program has been nationally recognized with awards from BreakAway, the national alternative break organization. The program has been honored as the "Alternative Spring Break Program of the Year" as well as the "Curriculum Based Alternative Break of the Year."

At Stanford, ASB was acknowledged for its efforts to introduce students to community service with a Lyons Service Award in 1998. In 2002, ASB was again recognized for its contributions by an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Dean of Students. In 2012, ASB celebrated its 25th anniversary.

The Associated Students of Stanford University was created in 1891 and is the only organization at Stanford of which every student is a member. The ASSU provides funding to over five hundred volunteer student organizations (VSO). The financial independence that the ASSU affords student organizations is one of the founding principles of the organization.

The Barrio Assistance Tutoring Program exists to provide consistent and quality academic tutoring and mentoring for K-12 school children in the community, primarily from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. We create this space to help navigate the Central American erasure in the Latino community at Stanford. It is important to recognize the diversity within the Central American diaspora. CASA is a space for CentAm's of all races, ethnicities, LGBTQ+ identity, religion, abilities, and/or immigration status. As we create this space we want to stress our commitment to Black/Indigenous folks within CentAm diaspora– who are too often at the forefront of the trauma in our community. This will be a continuous conversation at CASA as well as unpacking mestizaje and whiteness in LatAm/CentAm.

Challah brings people together to bake and sell challah to raise money and awareness for social justice. Flamenco Cardenal strives to cultivate artistic and intellectual community at Stanford centered on flamenco, an art form rooted in the musical traditions of the Romani diaspora, Latin America and the Caribbean, North and West Africa, and Spanish folkloric styles, many of which are of Islamic and Jewish origin. We hold flamenco classes for dancers, singers, and musicians, build relationships with the broader Bay Area flamenco community, organize group outings to local flamenco performances, and host academic lectures and workshops on critical and decolonial flamenco studies. Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc. (ΚΑΨ) is a collegiate Greek-letter fraternity, founded on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington. It is the 2nd oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek letter fraternity and the 1st intercollegiate fraternity incorporated as a national body.The fraternity has over 250,000 members with 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters in every state of the United States, and international chapters in the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea, Japan, the Caribbean, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nigeria, Bermuda, Canada, Dubai, Dominican Republic and South Africa.

Through its worldwide prominence, Kappa Alpha Psi® has had a global impact on events that affect our local communities and places around the globe. Local chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi® participate in community outreach activities to feed the homeless, provide scholarships to young people matriculating to college, serve as mentors to young men, participate in blood drives, and serve as hosts of seminars for public health awareness, to name a few. Nationally, Kappa Alpha Psi® has provided summer enrichment camps and funds for St. Jude Medical Research Center to assist in the fight against childhood catastrophic diseases by raising more than $1 Million. Internationally, Kappa Alpha Psi® members have answered the call to service by proudly serving our military in wars since WWI and raising funds to assist those in need following natural disasters worldwide, including hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, and earthquakes.

Kappa Sigma Fraternity is focused on the Four Pillars of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship and Service. Our chapter (Beta-Zeta) is committed to these values and our members interact with the larger community in accordance with them. You will find us all sitting at the same lunch table eating our wonderful chef's food while discussing recent political developments or watching a football game on a Sunday morning. Similarly, you can find us enjoying the sun in our turf backyard or listening to music in our lounge every weekend. We are constantly looking to make our college experience a memorable one, while maintaining a high level of academic performance. We provide a support network for our 75 members, looking out for each other's well-being during our time here, and preparing them to succeed in the post-collegiate world. The primary activities of the SGMOO are the Directed Reading Program (DRP) and Stanford Women in Math Mentoring program (SWIMM). The Black Business Student Association (BBSA) serves as a support network for Black MBA, MSx, and PhD students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB). The purpose of the FOM club is to help GSB students gain a deeper understanding of the rapidly changing mobility landscape that is being disrupted by self-driving and flying cars, new ownership models, and multi-modal transport models. These changes will have an unprecedented effect on hundreds of thousands of jobs in the US economy - and on society as a whole - and at the same time, create new business opportunities for entrepreneurs.

We will explore the four big trends that are actively challenging the existing infrastructure:

Connectivity: Cars will be able to communicate with each other, thereby avoiding accidents. What are some key technology trends to make this happen? What skills will be needed for entrepreneurs?
Autonomy: Cars will be able to drive themselves, which has tremendous effects on various factors such as urban planning, legal codes in case of accidents, insurances, business models for car producers, and new entrants such as Waymo and Uber, etc.
Sharing: Autonomous cars could be available at the click of a button, thus eliminating the need for personal car ownership. What are the effects on business models of car producers - a USD 2.3 trillion industry in the US alone?
Electric: Experts agree that the future of the car industry is in electric vehicles. Who will win in the race towards electric mass-mobility? Will it be prominent challengers such as Tesla or the established car producers?
