Alternative Spring Breaks @ Stanford
Service. Learning. Social Change.

Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB) @ Stanford are immersive service-learning programs that expose students to pressing social and cultural issues through community engagement, experiential education, direct service, group discussions, assigned readings, and reflective activities. The program’s vision is to empower students to become informed advocates for social change—locally, nationally, and globally.

ASB is a student-led Voluntary Student Organization (VSO) at Stanford University and an affiliate of the Haas Center for Public Service. As a proud Break Away Chapter Program, ASB would not be possible without the generous support of ASSU Special Fees.

Transforming students into lifelong advocates for social issues.

ASB programs have inspired students to remain engaged with the social and cultural issues they explore—leading to the creation of student groups, the pursuit of new academic paths, and even long-term career shifts rooted in public service and social advocacy.

History
The first ASB trip took place in 1987, organized by staff at what was then the Public Service Center (now the Haas Center for Public Service). As student interest grew, ASB evolved into a registered, student-run organization. In 1996, a winter-quarter course was added to enhance learning ahead of the spring break trips.

By the late 2000s, ASB expanded its reach:

In 2008, Impact Abroad launched, offering global service-learning trips during the summer.

In 2012, ThanksGiving Back was introduced as a new opportunity during Thanksgiving break.

At its peak, ASB offered up to 18 courses and trips per year, continuing to be a transformative experience for hundreds of Stanford students.

The Associated Students of Stanford University was created in 1891 and is the only organization at Stanford of which every student is a member. The ASSU provides funding to over five hundred volunteer student organizations (VSO). The financial independence that the ASSU affords student organizations is one of the founding principles of the organization.

The Barrio Assistance Tutoring Program exists to provide consistent and quality academic tutoring and mentoring for K-12 school children in the community, primarily from East Palo Alto and Menlo Park. The program focuses on providing individualized tutoring to each child, given their academic and language needs. Shotokan Karate is a weaponless martial art developed in Okinawa and Japan that emphasizes power and efficiency in combat. Skilled karateka defeat their opponents with a minimal number of techniques and effort, which is particularly useful when facing multiple opponents. JKA Shotokan is distinguished from other martial arts by the linearity and strength of its punches, blocks, and kicks. Precise techniques, accompanied by mastery and focus of energy flows and a deep knowledge of the body's vital points, make this karate style a comprehensive system for self-defense and combat.

Our dojo is a member of the international Japan Karate Association. This means our instruction is based on the teachings of the first pioneers of karate in Japan supplemented by the scientific analysis of later masters at the main dojo. JKA students have access to numerous published resources including books, articles, and YouTube videos. More importantly, your JKA belt rank is recognized in hundreds of dojos all over the United States and the world should you wish to travel and train or move to another city. Stanford Club Baseball provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to play competitive baseball at the sub-varsity level. Through a mix of games and practices, it encourages experienced players to continue to develop their skills to maximize their contributions to the team. The club measures its success in terms of both its on-field production and the level of participation by its members. Our season generally takes place from Mid-Winter quarter to early Spring Quarter, followed by post-season play should we qualify. The Fall Quarter mainly consists of practices, several scrimmages, and a tournament or two to keep the team sharp and get everyone familiar with each other. We are a self-coached team.

Stanford Club Tennis is a selective, competitive co-ed tennis team comprised of Stanford undergraduate and graduate students. We are a member of the USTA NorCal Tennis on Campus Series and primarily compete against other Northern California club tennis teams. We placed 3rd in the 2017-18 National Championships and 2nd in last three Sectional Championships. We recently placed 9th in the 2022-23 National Championships. The team practices 3 times a week and competes in ~10 tournaments each year. Outside of tennis, we have team dinners, BBQs, hikes, and other social activities. We'd love for you to join our team!

Stanford Club Squash, alongside the varsity women's team, represents Stanford in the College Squash Association as one of the league's top club programs.

We play during the fall and winter quarters against both club and varsity teams across the country, including colleges like Cal, Brown, Navy, Northwestern and Notre Dame. And we travel! Many of our matches take place over weekend trips to places like New York, Boston and New Haven. We also host a West Coast tournament at our home courts in February, and wrap up each season at the National Championships, which take place at Harvard, Yale, or Trinity College.

But most of all, we get together to practice and play. In between trips we run regular practices at our courts — where we share in the coaching, facilities and community of the varsity women's team — and hold socials, kickbacks and watch parties. We welcome anyone interested, from tennis converts to total beginners to lifelong players.

Since its founding, the SWR program has produced All-Americans, USA National Team Players, and Olympic 7's Rugby National Team Players, and has won numerous National Championships. Are we any good?
Yes! Our ultimate program has a long history of success. Stanford Superfly has been in the national championship finals fourteen times since 1995, with eight title wins– including 2016!– which is more title wins than any other women's team in the country. Our B team also has a tradition of being one of the best women's B teams in the nation. You can find USA Ultimate's top 25 rankings at their website. Note how many top teams are on the west coast: that means we have excellent competition at every tournament!

Flamenco Cardenal strives to cultivate artistic and intellectual community at Stanford centered on flamenco, an art form rooted in the musical traditions of the Romani diaspora, Latin America and the Caribbean, North and West Africa, and Spanish folkloric styles, many of which are of Islamic and Jewish origin. We hold flamenco classes for dancers, singers, and musicians, build relationships with the broader Bay Area flamenco community, organize group outings to local flamenco performances, and host academic lectures and workshops on critical and decolonial flamenco studies. In making Stanford a hub of flamenco culture in the Peninsula, we strive to make amor al arte more accessible to all, to center flamenco’s legacy as a multiethnic and historically marginalized art form, to uplift unorthodox and innovative approaches to flamenco studies and performance, and to amplify and honor the role of queer, Black, Asian, Chicanx, and Latinx artists in shaping flamenco’s past and present.

FreeFlow is a freestyle dance club committed to creating an open and safe space for dancers of all experience levels to learn, cypher (freestyle dance jam where people take turns dancing within a circle), workshop, and express themselves. We want to make dance accessible for all students, and we are committed to understanding the roots, history, and cultures that various dance styles stem from. Each year, we support the broader dance communities and learn about the histories of freestyle dance by inviting guest artists and attending local Bay Area workshops/dance events. Additionally, we seek to engage with broader dance communities by traveling within the country to perform at large showcases and dance competitions. Kappa Alpha Psi® Fraternity, Inc. (ΚΑΨ) is a collegiate Greek-letter fraternity, founded on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington. It is the 2nd oldest existing collegiate historically Black Greek letter fraternity and the 1st intercollegiate fraternity incorporated as a national body.The fraternity has over 250,000 members with 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters in every state of the United States, and international chapters in the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea, Japan, the Caribbean, Saint Thomas, Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Nigeria, Bermuda, Canada, Dubai, Dominican Republic and South Africa.

Through its worldwide prominence, Kappa Alpha Psi® has had a global impact on events that affect our local communities and places around the globe. Local chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi® participate in community outreach activities to feed the homeless, provide scholarships to young people matriculating to college, serve as mentors to young men, participate in blood drives, and serve as hosts of seminars for public health awareness, to name a few. Nationally, Kappa Alpha Psi® has provided summer enrichment camps and funds for St. Jude Medical Research Center to assist in the fight against childhood catastrophic diseases by raising more than $1 Million. Internationally, Kappa Alpha Psi® members have answered the call to service by proudly serving our military in wars since WWI and raising funds to assist those in need following natural disasters worldwide, including hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons, and earthquakes.
