Mission
The mission of the Afghan Student Union (ASU) is to create a supportive and inclusive community for Afghan students at Stanford University, while promoting Afghan culture and raising awareness about the challenges faced by Afghan communities, particularly in light of the current geopolitical crisis. Our organization seeks to create a supportive community while advocating for educational opportunities, especially for women in Afghanistan. Through outreach, advocacy, and solidarity, ASU strives to strengthen the voice of the Afghan diaspora and foster understanding among diverse communities at Stanford.

The Stanford chapter of the Alcohol Intolerance & Cancer Awareness Project (AICAP) promotes education, prevention, and research on alcohol intolerance and its established association with increased cancer risk, with particular focus on the often-misunderstood “Asian flush” response. Through campus-wide outreach, collaborative programming, and faculty-guided research partnerships with Stanford Medicine, AICAP provides evidence-based health education that empowers students to make informed decisions and supports early intervention around an underestimated public health issue.

Alternative Spring Breaks @ Stanford
Service. Learning. Social Change.

Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB) @ Stanford are immersive service-learning programs that expose students to pressing social and cultural issues through community engagement, experiential education, direct service, group discussions, assigned readings, and reflective activities. The program’s vision is to empower students to become informed advocates for social change—locally, nationally, and globally.

ASB is a student-led Voluntary Student Organization (VSO) at Stanford University and an affiliate of the Haas Center for Public Service. As a proud Break Away Chapter Program, ASB would not be possible without the generous support of ASSU Special Fees.

ASB programs have inspired students to remain engaged with the social and cultural issues they explore—leading to the creation of student groups, the pursuit of new academic paths, and even long-term career shifts rooted in public service and social advocacy.

History
The first ASB trip took place in 1987, organized by staff at what was then the Public Service Center (now the Haas Center for Public Service). As student interest grew, ASB evolved into a registered, student-run organization. In 1996, a winter-quarter course was added to enhance learning ahead of the spring break trips.

By the late 2000s, ASB expanded its reach:

In 2008, Impact Abroad launched, offering global service-learning trips during the summer.

In 2012, ThanksGiving Back was introduced as a new opportunity during Thanksgiving break.

At its peak, ASB offered up to 18 courses and trips per year, continuing to be a transformative experience for hundreds of Stanford students.

At Stanford, ASB was honored with the Lyons Service Award in 1998 and an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Dean of Students in 2002. The program celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012, marking a legacy of impact and leadership in public service education. In 2025, ASB was recognized by Stanford Report for the incredible programs and opportunities it provides to the student community.

The Animal Service Project (ASP) is dedicated to supporting in-need and often underfunded animal welfare organizations through meaningful volunteer service and community partnership; we believe that caring for animals also means caring for the people and environments that depend on them. By connecting students with hands-on opportunities in shelters, rescues, sanctuaries, and wildlife organizations, ASP works to improve animal well-being while strengthening the communities and ecosystems they are part of. Our mission is to foster compassion, responsibility, and mutual benefit for animals, people, and the broader environment.

We are a space where visual artists, writers, designers, poets, and makers of diverse backgrounds gather and create. We are primarily interested in art projects that directly interact and engage with students and bring art and arbitrariness to all places on Stanford's campus. To create arbitrarily is to embrace. We aim to be a space where students can tap into their creative urges in collaboration with others. We are driven by message rather than medium, allowing every story to manifest in whatever form it calls for.

We are a space for creatives to try each others’ mediums, exchange artistic hats, and converse in a collective language. The core mission of ATMA is to cultivate a deep understanding that spiritual Awareness is essential for leading a meaningful life — a belief that echoes through the diverse tapestry of religious traditions. Through exploring Theology, with a particular focus on Vaishnavism, ATMA aims to illuminate the connection between the soul and the divine. The club embraces Mysticism as a means to support the ultimate aspirations of theology — through practices such as devotional singing and mantra chanting as pathways to experiencing a divine connection.

What sets ATMA apart as a student club is its innovative approach to fostering unity among different spiritual paths — through the practice of aligning the soul with the divine and the endeavor of aligning various spiritual practices to unveil their common purpose. This dual concept of Alignment is foundational, offering both a personal path to spiritual growth and a collective exploration of the interconnectedness of diverse spiritual paths.

The Black Creative Collective is a student-initiated and run organization dedicated to promoting a collaborative and shared artistic community for Black students of African descent at Stanford. Through interdisciplinary projects, workshops, and showcases, we create a space for Black creatives across mediums–such as film, music, visual arts, fashion, and more–to connect, share, and amplify their work. In a campus arts culture where Black artists often feel underrepresented, the work of BCC ensures that Black creativity is celebrated and shared amongst the community. Cardinal Ballet Company (CBC) is Stanford's first and only ballet company. Founded in 1993 and completely student-run, CBC is composed of dancers from diverse backgrounds, including those with professional ballet and contemporary training. In addition to our 2 major ballet productions every year (the Nutcracker in the fall and a full-length ballet in the spring), we also offer opportunities for student choreography in various dance forms. Our mission is to bring dancers together who love performing and share our art with the community.

Challah brings people together to bake and sell challah to raise money and awareness for social justice. As a chapter, we have pledged to partner with other student groups at Stanford in order to support a wide range of humanitarian organizations, such as the War Effort in Ukraine, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Jewish Child and Family Services, and Make A Wish, to name a few. Shotokan Karate is a weaponless martial art developed in Okinawa and Japan that emphasizes power and efficiency in combat. Skilled karateka defeat their opponents with a minimal number of techniques and effort, which is particularly useful when facing multiple opponents. JKA Shotokan is distinguished from other martial arts by the linearity and strength of its punches, blocks, and kicks. Precise techniques, accompanied by mastery and focus of energy flows and a deep knowledge of the body's vital points, make this karate style a comprehensive system for self-defense and combat.

Our dojo is a member of the international Japan Karate Association. This means our instruction is based on the teachings of the first pioneers of karate in Japan supplemented by the scientific analysis of later masters at the main dojo. JKA students have access to numerous published resources including books, articles, and YouTube videos. More importantly, your JKA belt rank is recognized in hundreds of dojos all over the United States and the world should you wish to travel and train or move to another city. We strive to train students of all backgrounds as competent practitioners of JKA Shotokan Karate.

Stanford Club Baseball provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to play competitive baseball at the sub-varsity level. Through a mix of games and practices, it encourages experienced players to continue to develop their skills to maximize their contributions to the team. The club measures its success in terms of both its on-field production and the level of participation by its members. Our season generally takes place from Mid-Winter quarter to early Spring Quarter, followed by post-season play should we qualify. The Fall Quarter mainly consists of practices, several scrimmages, and a tournament or two to keep the team sharp and get everyone familiar with each other. We are a self-coached team.

Being part of SET involves being a team player for the barn and the horses as well as for your coaches and teammates. You'll be expected to participate in a variety of ways, from everyday responsibilities to weekly, quarterly, and yearly events. We promise you'll meet great people and have fun along the way.

Participation on the team is need blind and any riders with financial concerns should speak to the coaches who can help with financial aid for some or all costs.

In order to create a fair playing field, IHSA competitions are based on "catch riding," with riders drawing a horse provided by the host school. During the year, students accumulate points at IHSA shows for their teams but sometimes also for themselves.

The mission of the Stanford Ski & Snowboard Club is to create a community of skiers and snowboarders, facilitate their access to the mountains, help them develop as athletes, offer regional and national collegiate competitions. We offer optional competitive teams for competition in United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association races (NCAA Division II). Both skiers and snowboarders can participate in Racing, Park, and Freeride competitions.

Stanford Club Squash, alongside the varsity women's team, represents Stanford in the College Squash Association as one of the league's top club programs.

We play during the fall and winter quarters against both club and varsity teams across the country, including colleges like Cal, Brown, Navy, Northwestern and Notre Dame. And we travel! Many of our matches take place over weekend trips to places like New York, Boston and New Haven. We also host a West Coast tournament at our home courts in February, and wrap up each season at the National Championships, which take place at Harvard, Yale, or Trinity College.

But most of all, we get together to practice and play. In between trips we run regular practices at our courts — where we share in the coaching, facilities and community of the varsity women's team — and hold socials, kickbacks and watch parties. We welcome anyone interested, from tennis converts to total beginners to lifelong players.

We offer avenues to develop skills for casual recreation, sparring, poomsae, coaching, and refereeing, as well as regular opportunities to compete nationally and train with international teams. All are welcome, from seasoned black belts to beginners who have never kicked before; at the heart of Stanford Taekwondo is a vibrant team that supports each other as both athletes and friends.

About our teams:
We have two women's teams: Superfly (Women's A Team) and Firefly (Women's B Team). Superfly is more competitive and Firefly is more relaxed, but we do all of our activities together in the fall quarter, so you get to experience all of our programming and choose the level of involvement that floats your boat :]

Are we any good?
Yes! Our ultimate program has a long history of success. Stanford Superfly has been in the national championship finals fourteen times since 1995, with eight title wins– including 2016!– which is more title wins than any other women's team in the country. Our B team also has a tradition of being one of the best women's B teams in the nation. You can find USA Ultimate's top 25 rankings at their website. Note how many top teams are on the west coast: that means we have excellent competition at every tournament!
