Shotokan Karate is a weaponless martial art developed in Okinawa and Japan that emphasizes power and efficiency in combat. Skilled karateka defeat their opponents with a minimal number of techniques and effort, which is particularly useful when facing multiple opponents. JKA Shotokan is distinguished from other martial arts by the linearity and strength of its punches, blocks, and kicks. Precise techniques, accompanied by mastery and focus of energy flows and a deep knowledge of the body's vital points, make this karate style a comprehensive system for self-defense and combat.

Our dojo is a member of the international Japan Karate Association. This means our instruction is based on the teachings of the first pioneers of karate in Japan supplemented by the scientific analysis of later masters at the main dojo. JKA students have access to numerous published resources including books, articles, and YouTube videos. More importantly, your JKA belt rank is recognized in hundreds of dojos all over the United States and the world should you wish to travel and train or move to another city. We strive to train students of all backgrounds as competent practitioners of JKA Shotokan Karate.

The Stanford Alpine Club promotes the safe enjoyment of alpinism (rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, ski mountaineering, etc.) in the Stanford Community. The Stanford Alpine Club (SAC) has a strong history of alpine excellence at Stanford University and beyond. SAC was founded in 1946. The modern SAC perpetuates the original spirit of alpinism by providing a forum for planning excursions, and by introducing new members to the safe and responsible enjoyment of mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, ski mountaineering, and other alpine pursuits.

As "Custodians of Stanford Spirit, Tradition, and Revelry," the Stanford Axe Committee (or Axe Comm) is a student group devoted to supporting Stanford's excellent athletics program. Our primary responsibility is to guard and care for the Stanford Axe, the trophy of the annual Big Game between Stanford and UC Berkeley. In addition to Axe security, the Axe Committee plays a large role in promoting school spirit by attending athletic games and events. During football season, Axe Committee members are on the sidelines during each game waving flags, tossing t-shirts, and blowing our train whistle every time Stanford scores. The Axe Committee also waves flags on the court for Stanford Basketball and on the field for Stanford Soccer.

Stanford Club Baseball provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to play competitive baseball at the sub-varsity level. Through a mix of games and practices, it encourages experienced players to continue to develop their skills to maximize their contributions to the team. The club measures its success in terms of both its on-field production and the level of participation by its members. Our season generally takes place from Mid-Winter quarter to early Spring Quarter, followed by post-season play should we qualify. The Fall Quarter mainly consists of practices, several scrimmages, and a tournament or two to keep the team sharp and get everyone familiar with each other. We are a self-coached team.

Stanford Club Tennis is a selective, competitive co-ed tennis team comprised of Stanford undergraduate and graduate students. We are a member of the USTA Norcal Tennis on Campus Series and primarily compete against other Northern California club tennis teams. We placed 3rd in the 2017-18 National Championships and 2nd in last two Sectional Championships. More recently, we placed 9th in the 2022-23 National Championships. The team practices 3 times a week and competes in ~10 tournaments each year. Outside of tennis, we have team dinners, BBQs, hikes, and other social activities. We'd love for you to join our team!

Being part of SET involves being a team player for the barn and the horses as well as for your coaches and teammates. You'll be expected to participate in a variety of ways, from everyday responsibilities to weekly, quarterly, and yearly events. We promise you'll meet great people and have fun along the way.

Participation on the team is need blind and any riders with financial concerns should speak to the coaches who can help with financial aid for some or all costs.

In order to create a fair playing field, IHSA competitions are based on "catch riding," with riders drawing a horse provided by the host school. During the year, students accumulate points at IHSA shows for their teams but sometimes also for themselves.

The Stanford Fly Fishing and Tying club was established to share the joy and benefits of fly fishing with the Stanford community. Our goal is to promote the sport through education, conservation, service, and involvement. Our mission as a club is threefold:

1) To spread awareness of fly fishing not only as a sport, but as a form of relaxation, mindfulness, and art by hosting outings, workshops, and meetings to educate our community.

2) Promote conservation by engaging with local ecologists and conservation groups to preserve California's pristine trout waters.

3) Utilize the resources of Stanford and other angling clubs in the area to inspire a new generation of fly fishers through clinics and service projects.

Stanford Men's Squash, alongside the varsity women's team, represents Stanford in the College Squash Association as one of the league's top club programs.

We play during the fall and winter quarters against both club and varsity teams across the country, including colleges like Cal, Brown, Navy, Northwestern and Notre Dame. And we travel! Many of our matches take place over weekend trips to places like New York, Boston and New Haven. We also host a West Coast tournament at our home courts in February, and wrap up each season at the National Championships, which take place at Harvard, Yale, or Trinity College.

But most of all, we get together to practice and play. In between trips we run regular practices at our courts — where we share in the coaching, facilities and community of the varsity women's team — and hold socials, kickbacks and watch parties. We welcome anyone interested, from tennis converts to total beginners to lifelong players.

The Stanford Women's Rugby Team, also known as SWR, was founded in 1977. Since its founding, the SWR program has produced All-Americans, USA National Team Players, and Olympic 7's Rugby National Team Players, and has won numerous National Championships. Today the team competes in intercollegiate competition in Olympic 7's Rugby in the fall, and 15's Rugby in the winter in the Pacific Mountain Conference. The Stanford Women's Rugby Team is consistently one of the top teams in the country and prides itself on upholding its key values of Resilience, Challenge, and Solidarity. With these values in mind, SWR defines itself as "a team that plays best together".

We have two womxn's teams: Superfly (Womxn's A Team) and Firefly (Womxn's B Team). Superfly is more competitive and Firefly is more relaxed, but we do all of our activities together in the fall quarter, so you get to experience all of our programming and choose the level of involvement that floats your boat :]

Are we any good?
Yes! Our ultimate program has a long history of success. Stanford Superfly has been in the national championship finals thirteen times since 1995, with eight title wins– including 2016!– which is more title wins than any other women's team in the country. Our B team also has a tradition of being one of the best women's B teams in the nation. You can find USA Ultimate's top 25 rankings at their website. Note how many top teams are on the west coast: that means we have excellent competition at every tournament!
